Where the numbers come from

Every specification on this site was read off a manufacturer’s product page or spec sheet — or, where the maker publishes nothing, a distributor’s listing, which the unit’s page then names. Where two sources disagreed we took the manufacturer’s figure; where nobody publishes a figure, the field is blank rather than estimated. All 39 entries from 6 brands were recorded on 2026-09-20. 26 publish a per-batch capacity; 24 have a published price.

There is no test lab behind this site and no staff who have run these machines. What you are reading is the makers’ own published data, organised so it can be compared, plus arithmetic on it that is labelled as arithmetic.

Batch capacity versus the annual claim

The number this site leads with is batch capacity: pounds of fresh food that fit on the trays for one run, as published by the maker. It is the only capacity figure that describes the machine rather than your schedule.

Most home makers also advertise “up to N pounds per year”. That figure is batch capacity multiplied by an assumed number of cycles, and the assumption is never printed. So we print it. Dividing the annual claim by the batch capacity gives the cycles per year the claim needs; multiplying by the maker’s own published cycle time gives the hours of running that implies. A year has 8,760 hours. Of the 9 units here that make an annual claim and publish a cycle range, 1 would need more hours than that at the long end of their own range — and every one of them assumes no time at all for defrosting, cleaning, loading or pump maintenance between runs.

None of that makes the annual figure a lie; it makes it a ceiling. We show the ceiling and the arithmetic, on every card and every page, so you can decide how close to it you will actually run.

What “est.” means

Anything with that tag is calculated from published figures, and the formula is in one file that every page reads. Tray area is trays × width × depth. Pounds per tray is batch capacity ÷ trays. Price per pound is list price ÷ batch capacity. Energy per batch is power draw × the midpoint of the published cycle range, priced at $0.17/kWh, the 2025 US residential average — where a maker publishes a peak draw rather than a typical one, that estimate is an upper bound and the page says so.

Why there are no star ratings

Because we do not have any we can stand behind. An aggregate rating is a claim about what real owners think, and inventing one — or quietly reprinting a retailer’s — is the most common dishonest thing a comparison site does. The code gates every star on a cited, non-Amazon source; nothing currently clears that gate, so no stars render anywhere, and no page contains rating markup. Sorting falls back to the published specs.

Why prices are approximate

Freeze dryer prices move with sales, bundles and pump upgrades, and the same unit costs a different amount with a different pump in the box. Every price here is a snapshot of the maker’s base configuration on the date above, shown with a ~ so nobody mistakes it for a live quote. Lab and commercial units that are sold on quote show no price at all rather than a guess.

Why some units have no buy link

Roughly one in ten plausible-looking Amazon product IDs resolves to the wrong thing — a sibling size, a tray set, the pump on its own. We only publish a link once we have confirmed what it actually opens. Units we have not yet verified link to the manufacturer’s own page, or to nothing, which is the correct outcome: sending you to the wrong machine is worse than sending you nowhere.

How the lists are ordered

They are not opinions. Every list on the site says the published figure it is sorted by — batch capacity, price, footprint, or price per pound. Guides are filters over the same catalog, so a guide cannot contain a unit we have not recorded, and any guide that would qualify fewer than three units is not published at all. Comparison pages are limited to each unit’s nearest sibling and nearest rival by batch capacity.

What we never do

• Take money for placement. Nobody can buy a position in a list here.
• Write owner reviews for products whose owners we have not read.
• Print a rating, a review count or a price we cannot source.
• Estimate a specification a maker has not published and present it as theirs.

How this site makes money

Affiliate commission on retailer links, when we have verified links to publish. As an Amazon Associate, FreezeDryerHQ earns from qualifying purchases. Commissions never affect what appears on a list or in what order — the orderings are computed from specifications, so there is no lever to pull even if we wanted one.
